SSL certificates: cheap certs that are compatible

I'm looking for the cheapest SSL certificates that work with all the popular browsers.

I read one of the vendors had security problems but I can't remember which one.

What happens when a cert isn't compatible ? Does SSL just not work ?

Thank you.

I've had no problems.

I've been using startssl.com for a while now with their free certs, their procedure's different to most other SSL vendors but I've not found any issues with them yet. I'm even running them under apache using SNI so I'm not requiring additional IP addresses.

Depending on the incompatibility of the cert users are normally presented with a security error.
