Consider a SMS gateway service such as http://www.intellisms.co.uk/ - you pay for it, and of course it's useless if you wish to send SMS alerts to tell you that your network is down, but for non-critical uses it's a simple solution.

Yeap an old nokia with a transfer cable has been recommended by a few sites. I was looking this recently. Plenty of info on google
