Security risks from LKM - loadable kernel modules

It's quite clear that some people prefer their own handmade kernels and to get better security and performance out of their servers and don't mind the sacrifice of some time whenever there are security updates but how safe are loadable kernel modules ?

Can hackers can inject lines of code from root kits and the like into a running kernel in another way ?

Simply put, yes.

Try to download any loadable modules from well known web sites especially from main Linux distributor it is better to download source file(tar ball format) then extract it configure, make and make install it.

Also you could download "rkhunter" and install it on your computer.

They are very useful but like many things removing for security reasons adds an admin overhead. The choice is yours.
