From around 9am UK time this morning I get BADSIG errors and the package tzonedata is offered for an update from these package servers. archive.ubuntu.com gb.archive.ubuntu.com us.archive.ubuntu.com The German .de version is fine though. Malicious or cock up ?

uxbrid's response: It's been reported and a few have noticed it. You're correct about the .de workaround: http://tinyurl.com/6cjuxea
Has anybody used any APIs for shortening links in PHP? I need a noobie function that even I will be able to understand. Thanks.

Sometimes dmesg gets full of junk and I want to add something to the end. I know logger works with syslog but what about writing to dmesg so the last few entries are no longer junk ? Thanks in advance for any help.

Is there a simple tool to backup a whole partition or drive of a server ? The server must still be running. I don't want to fiddle with dangerous dd or rsync commands but can use a command line rather than a GUI if needed. I need it to be simple so I don't write over a live server drive ! It's important the backup and restore can be done without a reboot. Thank you.

uxbrid's response: Thanks for your answer and help. You can save a "live" partition with such things as WUBI which uses loop disks but obviously you need to disable as many services as possible beforehand to take a snapshot that has less "dymanic" data changing as it happens. Interesting about XFS freezing the FS.
I need to swap surnames and Christian names around in thousands of names from a database. It is possible without too much pain ?
