Our ISP is going to charge us for power used by our Linux and Windows servers. How can I measure what they will use ?
Asked in: Linux-Servers  (3 answers)
gbseamonkey's response: Couple of suggestions which i've used recently If they have a remote management card such as an HP advanced ilo these can give you accurate realtime figures. Alternatively use a cheap inline domestic power meter to check for actual wattage use.
I'm looking through the specs for the cisco 3560V2 series of switches. I notice in a lot of documentation it no longer mentions the max value for L2 .1q vlans and it might be causing my servers to drop connections when a maxmum number of configured vlans is reached. This makes me suspicious. Does anyone have an authoritative answer or know of the location of the correct pdf hidden in cisco : on the maximum number of configurable layer 2 and Layer 3 VLANS (svi) running both IP Services and IP Base? Thanks in advance.

gbseamonkey's response: Many thanks, what's the difference between these 2 values? Max VLANs -1K VLAN IDs - 4K also any idea how many SVIs are processing in asic as opposed to hardware thanks in advance
I'm looking for ways of testing global connections. Anyone got any favourite sites for running traceroutes ? traceroute.org is a bit outdated.

gbseamonkey's response: Here is a list of some Internet Exchange points , most if not all operate a looking glass section. http://www.bgp4.as/internet-exchanges You can also run BGP route lookups etc

I've heard that some attacks originate from spoofed Private LAN IPs but I'm not sure how I would go about setting my web server up to ban them. There's a 100 points reward for the best answer. Thanks.

gbseamonkey's response: As best practice any good ISP should have an updated bogon (including rfc1918) filter applied at the border router , this will also include filtering packets with their own source ranges. This isn't something an end user of a webserver should have to concern themselves with ,I'd ask your ISP
I need a rackmount UPS to put in a rack for two Dell R510 Servers to run for up to two and a half hours. Can someone please help with the power and battery calculations ? I haven't done this before and I'm stuck.
Asked in: Linux-Servers  (2 answers)
gbseamonkey's response: easiest way to get you started is using an existing tool The APC website is quite handy http://www.apc.com/tools/ups_selector/index.cfm? you can also check the peak and mean power consumption on the manufacturers website p.s 2.5 hours is a hell of a long runtime for a rack mount UPS
I'm new to IT and need to be able to measure packet loss between our two office file servers. They connect over an SDSL line.

gbseamonkey's response: mtr or indeed win mtr will help pin point with greater accurancy - please be aware that icmp may be filtered and/or rate limited at any point along the network path so do take results with a pinch of salt
I'm looking for remote IP KVM suggestions for about up to 200EUR or so. Any takers ?
Asked in: WindowsServers  (3 answers)
gbseamonkey's response: Probably not the answer you are looking for , but I simpy buy HP servers with an advanced licensed ilo card in each and have the ilo on a separate management subnet - makes life much easier http://h18013.www1.hp.com/products/servers/management/remotemgmt.html
